Its predecessor is believed to be the ancient Cypriot wine Nama, enjoyed long before the Crusades. According to tradition, it was served at the wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre in Limassol in 1191. The king is said to have described it as “the wine of kings and the king of wines.”

The name Commandaria appeared later and originates from La Grande Commanderie, the region where the wine was produced under the rule of the Knights Templar.

Ktima Gerolemo is a family-owned winery near Omodos that has been producing wine since 1987 and is an ideal stop along the Limassol wine villages route.
